One sound engineer in Ghana whose signature is felt on many songs that have been released over the years or so is Jeff Tennyson Quaye or Jay Q as he is known in the circles of showbiz.

Indeed he was named at last year’s Ghana Music Awards as the Sound Engineer of 2003. Having achieved success in the field of music engineering therefore, Jay Q has moved on to establish his own record label on which he has been producing musicians, especially in the genres of gospel and hiplife.

Some of the artistes who have made the record label, Q Lex Entertainment, popular are Castro, Pope Skinnie, Dr. Poh among others. Rhoda Doku is a new gospel artiste who was produced on the Q Lex Entertainment and whose work has recently hit the airwaves.

The album, which comes as the debut of Rhoda is titled ‘Great Change’ and it comes with songs composed in different languages including English, Akan, Ga and Dangme. For example, on the song ‘Nyame’, Rhoda does her best to show her fluency in some of the local Ghanaian languages when she sings in three of them.

Although the song is a popular one in some circles, especially when sang in Dangbe, she does some enhancement to it by presenting it also in Akan and Ga to, I believe, increase its popularity. What she says in the song is simply “it is the Lord I will follow, I shall never return, no matter what happens”.

As a song that was created by Jay Q, there is no wonder that it is done with great dose of ‘dzama’ or ‘kpanlogo’. Heavy percussion instruments as well as drums (computer stimulation of course), clapping and a sound supporting vocals all add to make this sound good to the ear.

The title song ‘Great Change’ is itself not entirely new because some musicians, Sunny Okoson included, have expressed their joy at becoming ‘born again’ in the very words of this song.

The main point of the song, according to Rhoda, is that she has seen a great change in her life since she met God, as such she has stopped doing some of the things she did when she was in the ‘world’. Rhoda, however, adds a few lines to embellish the song. It comes in a slow reggae, one that people will relax to listen.

The 23-year old Rhoda Doku is a former student of Fijai Secondary School, works with the West Africa Gas Pipeline Project as a secretary and worships at the Christian Action Faith Ministries. Though she started singing when she was eight years old, she has now had the opportunity of releasing her maiden album.

Other songs on the album include ‘Olu Wani Wajumi’, ‘Ino Go Be’ and ‘Yesu Bra’. All songs on the album were composed by Rhoda and arranged by Jay Q. the album was recorded and mixed at the Hush Hush Studios for Q Lex Entertainment.
