Adjetey Lomo joins the "Urban Gospel" train

While Ghanaian gospel music lovers keep celebrating artistes who sing in the local languages, there seem to be a new sensation building up among those who are more geared towards urban-like gospel music with an international touch as created by renowned artistes like Danny Nettey, Jackie Ankrah, Nii Okai and Mercy Ofei. The new kid on the "urban gospel" block is Adjetey Adjei Lomo.

Known in private life as Nathaniel Adjetey Lomo, the young musician has a powerful voice which can be described as the baritone version of soft-voiced Nii Okai of "Mi Jie Oyi" fame.

Born to Madam Ayishitu Annun-Yemoh and the late Adjei Annan-Lomo at La in the Greater Accra Region, he has developed a strong passion for spreading the gospel of Christ through music and though he is of a local breed, he told this writer that he felt more confident singing in the English language than in the local tongues. " I can equally sing in the local languages but everyone has his or her own style and as long as God ministers through my preferred style, I think I am alright with it".

Adjetey Lomo started singing at a very tender age and was part of the school choir during his basic education at the La Bawaleshie Primary School in Accra. He, however, set his musical talent aside to pursue other ambitions after his basic education.

He proceeded to the National Vocational and Technical Institute (NVTI) where he graduated with a certificate in Air Conditioning. The multi-talented young chap then pursued a CIM UK course in Marketing at the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS).

After accomplishing his educational ambitions, Adjetey decided to return to his first love which was music while working as an Estate Developer, a profession he still pursues. Set to do God's work through music, Adjetey has released his maiden album titled Songs of The Cross.

The album has 13 inspirational and soul soothing songs on it and though it is very obvious to identify the fact that they were composed and sang by a Ghanaian, the rhythms and modulations in some of the songs could easily pass for a foreign album.

Most of the songs go in the mid-tempo vein and adopt funky beats. The voice of Adjetey as well as the blend from the instrumentation and the backing vocalists make the songs, which all come in English, more enjoyable and meditative.

I'm In Love, a mid-tempo reggae song on the album, is actually a familiar song sang by the choirs of many Pentecostal and Charismatic churches but Adjetey expertly modifies it and makes it sound as good as an original version. Power of The Cross is a slow-paced worship song which is sure to send a listener into a meditative posture.

There is also an enjoyable worship medley which contains old hymns and though many of the songs are familiar tunes known by many Christians, Adjetey and his backing vocalists handle them so well just as the instrumentation gives the album its needed flavour. Other great songs on the album include Life, Old Rugged Cross, When I Survey, At The Cross and Jesus Thank You.

Adjetey Adjei Lomo intersperses the songs with inspirational exhortations and this, he says, is a deliberate step he is taking towards his dream of becoming a Pastor. The father of one is married to Gifty Akua Vasco and worships at Christ The King Catholic Church in Accra. The album was produced by Pastor Joseph Gyebi of Untyed Records.
