MUSIGA fights Ghana Music Awards organisers

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has expressed concern about the failure of Charter House to pay remuneration to the union after successfully organizing the Ghana Music Awards.

In a letter sighted by BEATWAVES, MUSIGA said, “After Ghana Music Awards 2007, no remuneration was given to the union though we wrote to remind you. As a major stakeholder in issues involving music and musicians in this country, we deem it very unfortunate for such an event to be planned and organized without any consultation from our office.”

On the Ghana Music Awards 2008, both leadership of the Ghana Association of Phonographic Industry (GAPI) made up of music producers, and MUSIGA, have expressed concern about how organizers of the Ghana Music Awards have not consulted them as at now.

Both groups have agreed to draw the attention of the organizers to this unfortunate development by writing two separate letters to them and awaiting their reaction.

At a meeting the two bodies agreed in principle to organize their own awards next year under a proposed name - Ghana Entertainment Awards - for which the groups would institute a joint committee to work on the awards.

MUSIGA further stated that “we recognized the fact that you have the right to organize the event as a private business initiative. However, we also know that the union’s direct or indirect involvement will add up to the credibility of the event and thus the union should not be ignored as it has the ultimate responsibility to also ensure that the appropriate procedures, measures and industry practices are followed,” adding that “we are hopeful that the music awards organizers, Charter House Productions will do the right thing to promote and sustain our mutual interest”.

In a related development, MUSIGA has announced that it would hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, February 11 at its headquarters.
