    Musicians attack COSGA

Following the allegation that music users including radio and television stations are not paying royalties, a large number of Ghanaian musicians have directed their anger at these media houses for being responsible for the poverty in the industry.

But the Acting Director of GTV, Moses Jyapong, at a public forum with stakeholders in the music industry last Tuesday to mark the 10th MTN Ghana Music Awards, made it clear that Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has been paying its royalties to the Copyright Society of Ghana (COSGA).

Documents available also indicated that last year alone, GBC paid an amount of GH¢42,750.00 (420 million old Ghana cedis) as royalties to COSGA.

The documents indicated that on March 17 2008, GBC paid GH¢22.375.00 as part payment of royalties to the right owners, and paid another GH¢ 21,375.00 on December 4 2008.

The musicians alleged that COSGA executives made it clear to them that in 2008, music users failed to pay royalties to the Society and that it was unable to distribute royalties to the right owners.

According to them, the records showed that between 2006 and 2008, GBC alone paid close to GH¢140,000 (1.4 billion old Ghana cedis).

At a meeting last Wednesday at the Abrantie Spot at Abeka Lapaz in Accra, the musicians who are members of the Ghana Music Owners Rights Protection Society (GAMORPS) called on the entire executive members of COSGA to come out and tell the stakeholders in the industry the total amount of monies collected on behalf of musicians last year from various music users.

They also declared that executives of COSGA should also make a list of all music users including those who have failed to pay their royalties to the right owners for them to know the amount each and every organization was paying.

GAMORPS members include Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Randy Nunoo, Dr. Paa Bobo and Obuoba J.A Adofo.

Others are Slim Buster, Aboagye Asiama, Yaw Labito, Mac Tontoh, Rex Omar, Mark Okraku Mantey and a host of other prominent musicians.
