South African storyteller and musician Pilani Bubu is set to return to the UK this July with a captivating new show. She’ll be performing tracks from her latest albums, Folklore Chapter 2: Ekuseni and Nay’Indaba, offering audiences a live journey through her evolving musical exploration of identity, history, and narrative.
Presented by Jinn Records, Pilani Bubu will perform at The Rose Hill, Brighton, on July 4th and The Art Bank, Shepton Mallet, on July 11th.
Ekuseni delves into Pilani’s ancestral lineage and spiritual roots, blending folk, jazz, and spoken word to explore themes of tradition, ritual, and inherited wisdom. Nay’Indaba expands on this, examining the political and social landscape of modern South Africa. This album commemorates 30 years since the end of apartheid with powerful songs addressing womanhood, freedom, and collective memory.
Pilani’s distinctive style is deeply rooted in South African folklore, yet it effortlessly crosses genre boundaries, incorporating elements of jazz-rock, afrobeat, soul, and psychedelic influences. Her performances are renowned for their intimacy and theatricality, often weaving together song, spoken word, and visual elements for a truly immersive experience.
