Build-up to 20th VGMAs on the low?

Entertainment pundits have lamented that the build-up to music’s biggest night in Ghana, the 20th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, has received low patronage, attention and euphoria this time around.

Contrary to what people might have anticipated the buzz surrounding the 20th-Anniversary edition of the VGMAs to be like, many have rather expressed disappointment in the zeal and approach with which Ghanaians have embraced the awards scheme this year.

This has been largely attributed to the early back to back roll out of publicity and event schedules leading to the major event like the Nominees Announcement Party on the 15th March and the Nominees Jam which took place at the Kumasi City Mall on the 6th of April this year.

They were supposed to be the major events that sparked publicity and create the euphoria needed for the main night on the 18th of May, 2019 but since the main event had been pushed a month later than usual, the buzz it was supposed to create couldn’t be sustained long enough.

Other critics have constructively rebutted that the line up of activities and events in the build-up to the main night would do just more than give the VGMAs its needed publicity, patronage and euphoria but would rather reinforce this year’s intentions to celebrate 20 years of music brewed in the Ghanaian pot.

The line-up of activities set to unfold include an official Highlife Party on Wednesday 15th May, a 20th VGMA Industry Awards Night on Thursday 18th May, the usual Music Business Seminar on the morning of Friday 17th May and the 20th VGMA Experience Concert in the evening of the same day.

All these events are scheduled to precede the main event on Saturday 18th May 2019. Hopefully, there could be a possible change in venue as a boost to the program and as a way of ushering in a new level of prestige that the awards scheme is tagged with.
