Shake, the most recent work of art by Kenyan artist Vallerie Muthoni, better known by her stage name Brown Suga, has been released. This upbeat dance anthem combines dancehall, gengetone, hip-hop, and riddim to create an amazing soundscape.
Shake is a club hit that’s sure to get everyone moving with its infectious beat and swagger reminiscent of Lil Maina and the unmistakable appeal of up-and-coming Kenyan pop diva Kahvinya.
The song reflects the lively spirit of gengetone anthems with its heart-pounding beat and catchy chorus. Vallerie says, “It’s a winning recipe of an infectious hook, fire verses, melodies, and that beat.” She describes the song as a call to let loose, whether you’re at your favorite hangout, at the barbershop, or relaxing at home.
In this effort, Vallerie Muthoni highlights the fact that her artwork defies conventional genre limitations. She says, “When you want to move your body and have a great time, this track is the perfect anthem to blast.” “It serves as a reminder that you can embrace the present, be present, and let loose no matter who you are or where you’re from.”
At the height of gengetone’s popularity in 2020, Shake’s quest got underway. This was never a track to rush, though, for Vallerie. For two years, the song, which was produced by Pesos, Dencho, and Awe Killer—the same formidable team behind her EP Vision 2020—sat in the vaults. She says, “Now it feels perfect, but I knew it wasn’t the right time to release it back then.” Shake has developed into a musical masterpiece that exhibits both patience and inventiveness as a result of working with Lil Maina and Kahvinya.
With her first hit, which she co-wrote with Mbithi, Vallerie’s musical career took off in 2017. Her talent immediately attracted the attention of both fans and the media at the age of 17. She was the sole female artist to be recognized in Homeboyz’s esteemed Jumpoff Freshman Class in 2018. She put out two EPs in the following two years, The Wavy Soul (2018) and Pisces SZN (2019), which demonstrated her ability to switch from soft melodies and hard-hitting rap with ease. She took a break before returning with Vision 2020, a piece that showcases her development as an artist in the post-pandemic world.
Vallerie is preparing for a world tour to promote Vision 2020 as Shake continues to resonate on the radio. More aesthetically spectacular music videos and fascinating partnerships with some of Africa’s most gifted musicians are in store for fans.
