South African production outfit The Moodyfreaks have released “Cerebral Hemisphere”, the second instalment in their Hemisphere trilogy. This is a three-part body of work built around deep, soulful and melodic electronic music, with each project examining a different facet of human experience.
The album follows the trilogy’s opening chapter and continues a structure the group describes as a musical universe built one hemisphere at a time, with the third and final instalment still to come. Where the first project set the tone for the series, “Cerebral Hemisphere” pushes further into the more introspective, cerebral textures its title suggests, without straying from the warmth and musicality that has defined The Moodyfreaks’ sound.
“We’re essentially building a musical universe one hemisphere at a time, with the final chapter still to come,” the group said of the ongoing project.
For The Moodyfreaks, the LP is less a standalone release than an entry point. The group has positioned the album as a way to introduce listeners to a developing South African electronic music story. That framing tracks with the group’s history. The Moodyfreaks have been active in South Africa’s house music space for well over a decade. The duo have worked across a catalogue of singles, EPs and collaborations released through Soulful People Records alongside a run of features and remix credits with other South African and international artists.
