Hip hop artiste, Abena Rockstar, has been selected for studies by the Department of African Studies at the Howard University in Washington for their monthly show, The Hip Hop African Podcast.
Abena’s song, ‘Abena’ was selected by the department for it to be catalogued on their podcast show. The Hip Hop African Podcast features discussions and interviews on hip hop music and culture produced by African artists in Africa and in the Diaspora.
Msia Kibona Clark, the assistant professor at the department said “this month’s show is focused on songs that features strong lyricism of which Abena Rockstar’s song ‘Abena’ is among their best-selected songs from Africa”
The programme has featured songs of other African artistes from countries including Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. Abena Rockstar has produced a number of songs and released an EP titled M.A.F.I.A this year.
Her body of work has had some plays this year; giving her the opportunity to perform on various music platforms including the Sabolai Radio stage and the Yoyotinz shrine both at the 2017 Chalewote street arts festival.
The selection of her Abena song as part of the chosen songs nomination to be featured on the show should do well to not only encourage her but to encourage more females Hip hop artistes.
