Renowned music and film producer, Gabriel Osei has bemoaned the quality of Ghanaian music produced onto the Ghanaian music market in recent times saying they are not concerned about doing quality music.
According to him, music producers these days don’t spend time and money to record timeless music that will appeal to the music users.
He stressed that it is about time Ghanaian music producers’ re-defined Ghanaian music such as highlife to suit the present time.
He mentioned that Ghanaian music producers should also invest lots of money in producing quality music to enable their works to meet international standards.
He noted that there are a lot of Ghanaian rhythms that musicians and their producers can explore and utilize, adding “We should open up to other Ghanaian rhythms and chords”.
The producer complained bitterly about some corporate entities using musical works without paying royalties to the right owners, adding that the failure of music users to pay royalties is seriously affecting the producers.
He expressed worry that due to lack of good policies to protect the interest of music producers as well as the industry, music producers are not willing to approach the banks for loans to boost the music production business, adding that producers have lost interest in the music business in Ghana.
He, however, launched an all-out attack on non-Ghanaians who make music and films in the country without having a work permit.
He, therefore, urged the Copyright Administration should enforce the laws and also put in place structures to protect the interest of the industry stakeholders
